Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Hyloicus pinastri. Raised to species status by Derzhavets, 1979, Ent. Obozr. 58: 113. Erroneously synonymized with Sphinx pinastri by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 42. Reinstated as a species and transferred to Hyloicus by Danner, Eitschberger & Surholt, 1998, Herbipoliana 4(1): 55. Transferred back to Sphinx by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 68. Implicitly returned to Hyloicus by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko, 2019, Hawkmoths of Russia and adjacent territories: 119, 438.
