Taxonomic Notes:
UNPUBLISHED COMB. REV.
Transferred to Sphinx by Rothschild, 1919, Novit. Zool. 26: 202. Transferred to Hyloicus by Danner, Eitschberger & Surholt, 1998, Herbipoliana 4(1): 58. Transferred back to Sphinx by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 68.
Unpublished phylogenomic analyses confirm that to prevent paraphyly of Sphinx, the genus Hyloicus must be accepted as valid (as asserted by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko (2019) (STI 22079). However, they did not formally include all the relevant species in Hyloicus and Hyloicus oberthueri is one of those that remains to be formally transferred.
