Taxonomic Notes:
A Plötz manuscript name written on a label of a paratype in NHMV that was made available by Rothschild & Jordan. Rothschild & Jordan queried whether this species was that listed by Bönninghausen, 1899, Dt. ent. Z., Iris 12: 129, as “Theretra spec. A” [or was this a typographical error for “spec. C”?]. Synonymized with Xylophanes elara by Clark, 1928, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club 10: 36. Reinstated as a subspecies of Xylophanes elara by Clark, 1929, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club 11: 8. Reinstated as a species by Draudt, 1931, in Seitz (ed.), Die Gross-Schmett. Erde 6: 894, who commented “Gehlen examined the genital organs and found them to be different. There are no transitions whatever between the two species according to Gehlen”. It is presently unverified whether Gehlen published this observation and reinstated Xylophanes hydrata to species status prior to Draudt (1931).
