Taxonomic Notes:

Synonymized with Theretra clotho as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 769. Reinstated as a species by Seitz, 1929, in Seitz (ed.), Die Gross-Schmett. Erde 10: 565, who stated that "in Ceram and Dutch New Guinea celata and clotho fly together". However, it is likely that Seitz actually meant "celata and indistincta fly together", as the latter species is missing from his account, while he treated manuselensis as a subspecies of clotho (and omitted reference to papuensis entirely). Implicitly resynonymized with Theretra clotho as a subspecies by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 194. Reinstated as a species by Vaglia, Haxaire, Kitching & Liyous, 2010, European Ent. 3: 66.
