Mus.26 (3): 33, considered submarginalis to be a subspecies of doubtful validity. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 76. Erroneously treated as a subspecies of Andriasa contraria by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.3. Re-synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 39. Implicitly reinstated as a subspecies by Pierre, 2001, Bull Soc. ent. Fr.106: 264.
Forewing outer margin straighter than in Andriasa contraria contraria. Said to differ from Andriasa contraria contraria in characters of the male genitalia but these were not described by Pierre (2001): "les g├®nitalias de ces trois entit├®s [Andriasa contraria contraria, Andriasa contraria submarginalis and Andriasa contraria suffusa] ├®tant passablement distincts".
