Hemaris aethra
Distribution:
Schmidt (2018) (STI 21787) reported specimens from Arkansas (n = 2) and Oklahoma (n = 1) that DNA barcode as Hemaris aethra (BIN AAA9121). It is unclear whether these represent a disjunct population near the Ozark Plateau or mtDNA introgression/ancestral polymorphism within Hemaris diffinis. These are not mapped here. It also remains to be determined whether, and if so how far, the range of Hemaris aethra extends further south, potentially to encompass Wisconsin, southern Michigan and the eastern states down the Appalachian Mountains as far as eastern Tennessee (as might be possible given the range of its larval hostplant, Diervilla lonicera (Schmidt, 2018) (STI 21787)).
