Madoryx dentatus Gehlen, 1921

[Syntypes] No locality given [Mexico to Colombia] [NHMUK; ?MNHU; ?CMNH; ?ZSBS]. Gehlen listed no specific type specimens, stating simply that the subspecies was found from Mexico to Colombia and that he was proposing a name for the northern specimens referred to by Rothschild & Jordan (19030 as being somewhat different from those of the southern populations (Surinam to S Brazil) in having the forewing produced to a point on Rs4. Regarding material from “Mexico to Colombia”, Rothschild & Jordan (1903: 385) listed only specimens from “Rio Dagua, Colombia (Rosenberg)” as being in the Tring Museum (now in NHMUK), of which only a single ♂ has been located. The other specimens from Central American countries referred to by Gehlen (1931) are interpreted as being those from Jalapa [Mexico] and Chiriqui [Chiriquí, Panama] that were cited by Rothschild & Jordan (1903: 384) as being listed by Druce, 1896, Biologia cent.-am. (Zool.) Lepid.-Heterocera 2: 303, of which the latter are in the MNHU and the former most likely are (they are not in NHMUK). All these specimens can be interpreted as being syntypes. The most appropriate specimen for selection as the lectotype is probably a ♂ labelled “type” (Lino, Panama, 800m (coll. Fassl) [ex coll. Gehlen]) in CMNH.
