Taxonomic Notes:
STAT. NOV.
Synonymized with Andriasa contraria contraria by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
The illustrated differences in male genitalia are small and could largely be the result of different viewing angles of the structures; they are certainly well within the range of individual variation for a smerinthine species. However, while the DNA barcode divergence of samples from SE Kenya and eastern Tanzania is small, they do form a separate BIN with a similar level of differentiation to other BINs treated here as subspecies of Andriasa contraria. Consequently, for consistency, Andriasa caliginis is removed from synonymy and treated here as a valid subspecies of Andriasa contraria.
