Taxonomic Notes:
STAT. NOV.
Synonymized with Andriasa contraria contraria by Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 32, who treated it as a form with a large black discal spot.
DNA barcode analysis suggests that the internal taxonomy of Andriasa contraria s.l. is complex and requires further and comprehensive study of both morphology and DNA sequence data (both mitochondrial and nuclear). DNA barcodes suggest that Andriasa stigmaticus is a separate taxon but could only be assigned species status if, at least, the subspecies diffusus, suffusa and submarginalis were also raised to species status. As this work has yet to be undertaken, it is considered here that for now it is best to treat stigmaticus as a subspecies of Andriasa contraria.
