Cephonodes melanogaster
Male: Upperside of abdomen darker than in Cephonodes hylas, Cephonodes australis and Cephonodes virescens. Underside of abdomen with no trace of brown scaling and lateral white patches on posterior sternites much reduced, making the underside of the abdomen appear much blacker than in Cephonodes hylas, Cephonodes australis and Cephonodes virescens. FWL: 25-27 mm. Female: As the male but slightly larger and with thinner, smooth antennae. FWL: 27-32 mm.
Male genitalia: Similar to those of Cephonodes hylas and Cephonodes australis but: Ventral lobe of left valve longer than dorsal lobe (as in Cephonodes virescens).
A sample in BOLD from "Sumatera" that DNA barcodes as Cephonodes melanogaster is considered erroneous until further supporting evidence is forthcoming.
