Type data:
LECTOTYPE ♂ “Borneo”, «Sphingid genitalia slide No. 755, BMNH(E) #272248» [NHMUK]; designated by Haxaire & Kitching, 2003, Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 108: 356. Rothschild, 1894, Novit. zool. 1: 86, gave no type locality but Rothschild, 1919, Novit. zool. 26: 251, stated it was Borneo, although he provided no supporting evidence. Haxaire & Kitching, 2003, Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 108: 356, could not confirm the source or veracity of this locality, now given on a printed label attached to the lectotype, but they considered it entirely plausible. However, Eitschberger, 2007, Neue ent. Nachr. 60: 28, considered that the genitalia of the lectotype did not correspond to those of the taxon that he considered to occur on Borneo (i.e., “Cechenena catori”). Thus, “for reasons of stability” (presumably based on Recommendations 76A.1.4 and 76A.2 of the Code, although these were not explicitly cited), he re-designated the type locality of Daphnis chimaera as Burma, the genitalia of which population he considered did agree. However, it is doubtful whether this action was valid under the Code.
Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Cechenena aegrota by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 800. Reinstated as a species by Haxaire & Kitching, 2003, Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 108: 356.
