Cephonodes banksi subsp. johani
Male larger and darker than Cephonodes banksi banksi. Orange scales surrounding sterigma, anterior to anal tuft, provide a diagnostic character for separating females from males. Transverse white line on abdomen above, preceding the reddish-orange band, reduced or absent (prominent in Cephonodes banksi banksi); rear part of abdomen, posterior to the reddish-orange band, nearly black with only a faint trace of brown (brownish-orange in Cephonodes banksi banksi). Overall, the abdomen is very similar dorsally to that of the female of the sexually dimorphic Cephonodes banksi banksi. Head, thorax and legs yellow-orange, and posterior part of thorax and hindlegs black (head, anterior part of thorax, forelegs and midlegs are bright orange in Cephonodes banksi banksi). Patches at end of abdominal sternites reduced to small white spot (prominent and orange in Cephonodes banksi banksi).
Femalel arger than male and darker. Posterior end of abdomen above black. Yellowish area on underside of thorax reduced, and white lateral spots at ends of abdominal sternites posteriorly vestigial, compared to the male.
Valve with dorsal lobe much longer and broader in comparison to ventral lobe than in Cephonodes banksi banksi. Phallus longer and medially thicker than in Cephonodes banksi banksi, more than proportionally so given the size difference of the moths. Phallus apex in lateral view without a recess. In Cephonodes banksi banksi, apex of phallus in lateral view is shaped like a foot with a recess behind the heel. Vesica directed anteriorly, more-or-less parallel to phallus with a sharply tapered and bluntly pointed diverticulum that is recurved at about 90° towards phallus.
