Type data:

[HOLOTYPE] [♂] [New Caledonia:] Loyalty Islands, Lifu [NHMUK]. Rothschild did not state how many specimens constituted the type series of simplex. However, a holotype can be inferred from Rothschild, 1919, Novit. zool. 26: 221, who stated that "the type appears to be unique, no further specimens being on record".

Synonymized with Cephonodes janus as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 465.
