Holotype [United States:] Georgia [????]. Boisduval himself never saw a specimen of Sphinx catalpae. He described it from an unpublished drawing by John Abbot and a note from John Leconte (whose manuscript name Sphinx catalpae was). Boisduval had been promised a pair but the death of Abbot prevented the promise from being realized.
