Ceratomia catalpae
Southern specimens seem to be duller and less well marked than northern ones, and have an obvious yellowish spot on the metanotum that is much paler in northern examples. Similar to Ceratomia undulosa, but: thorax upperside with collar not edged yellow buff;abdomen upperside with brown lateral patches smaller; foretarsus with 1st segment a little longer than 2nd; hindtibia with long terminal spur less than 2/3 length of 1st hindtarsal segment; forewing upperside with markings in basal half less distinct; discal spot smaller; fringe spots variable in size; hindwing underside with bands less marked, the distal one not dentate.
Male genitalia: 10th abdominal segment asymmetrical, but inconspicuously so; uncus less vertically dilated subapically; gnathos shorter, the lobe broader than long, sinuate, the right half truncate; the left rounded; valve small, narrow, broadest just before apex; harpe short, broad, almost oblong, somewhat narrowing to apex, which is sinuate, the ventral lobe shorter than dorsal, the dorsal margin slanting, dentate; phallus with a very long, conical, horizontally curved apical tooth.
Female genitalia: Ostial plate similar to that of Ceratomia hageni, but the ridge covering the ostium thicker and less distinctly sinuate.
