Eumorpha fasciatus (Taxonomy)
Synonymized with Philampelus vitis by Grote & Robinson, 1865, Proc. ent. Soc. Philad.5: 156. Reinstated as a species by Weymer, 1875, Stett. ent. Ztg36: 49. However, most subsequent authors overlooked this reinstatement (although M├Âschler and Burmeister were notable exceptions) until Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool.9 (suppl.): 491-2, settled the matter. Transferred to Eumorpha by Hodges, 1971, in Dominick et al., Moths Amer. N. of Mexico21: 122 (key), 126.
An unmistakable species, easily identified by the broad X-shaped pale pattern on the forewing upperside and the pink marginal band of the hindwing upperside. Tibiae shorter scaled than Eumorpha vitis vitis. Hindbasitarsus very little shorter than hindtibia. Forewing upperside pattern very similar to Eumorpha vitis vitis but the single straight line posterior to base of CuA2 runs at right angles to the posterior margin (not obliquely); discal spot appears simple, triangular, but there is also a proximal part within the discal cell barely darker than the rest of the cell; veins M3, CuA1 and CuA2 highlighted in white. Hindwing upperside with black median band essentially restricted to area between CuA2 and 1A, distal to which is a weakly defined pink patch; marginal band from apex to CuA2 pink, broad; tornal area pink. Hindwing underside with inner marginal red area more extensive than Eumorpha vitis vitis. Uncus pointed. Inner face of valve densely hairy, dorsal margin nearly straight. Harpe with two processes (as in Eumorpha megaeacus and Eumorpha adamsi); one a pointed, curved hook, partly obscured by the other, which is short, obtuse, compressed, broad. Aedeagus stout, apical process short, triangular.
