Implicitly synonymized with Polyptychus pygarga as a subspecies by Jordan, 1929, Novit. zool. 35: 188. Treated as a species by Delf & Harris, 1964, Nigerian Field 29: 155. Resynonymized with Neopolyptychus pygargus [sic] as a subspecies by Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 19. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 72. Reinstated as a subspecies of Neopolyptychus pygarga by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 59.
