Proposed for the species illustrated and misidentified by Stoll, 1782, in Cramer, Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) 4: 216, pl. 394, fig. D, as the male of Sphinx ficus. Synonymized with Pachylia ficus by Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 137. Reinstated as a species and transferred to Pachylia by Butler, 1876, Trans. zool. Soc. Lond. 9: 578.
