Nomenclature
-
Subtribe: DilophonotinaGenus: Perigonia
Species:
Perigonia manni Clark, 1935
Usage:
valid
Type data:
HOLOTYPE ♂ Haiti: Cape Haytien [Cap-Haïtien], 1912 (W.M. Mann) [CMNH].
Taxonomic Notes:
DNA barcoding suggests that Perigonia manni may be synonymous with Perigonia lefebvraei, as samples from Cuba identified as Perigonia lefebvraei and specimens identified as Perigonia manni from Hispaniola show very little divergence, forming a very tight cluster. However, it is currently unclear whether one, or both, species occurs on both Cuba and Hispaniola, and so that some samples in BOLD are misidentified with one species currently unrepresented (as suggested by Haxaire (2016); STI 21229). That said, during the recent (10/2016) recuration of Perigonia, the purported diagnostic pattern characters were not found to hold. Further study is necessary to determine the status of Perigonia manni and the distribution of both taxa if they prove to be separate species.
