Nomenclature notes:
Although Clark originally referred to this taxon as "Amphion nessus f. aest. floridensis subsp. nov." and stated that "this form is evidently the summer brood", the "subsp. nov." epithet allows floridensis to be treated as an available name. The substitute name for Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777.
