Proposed as a subspecies of Polyptychus pygarga. Raised to species status by Jordan, 1929, Novit. zool. 35: 190. Erroneously treated as a subspecies of Polyptychus pygarga by Pinhey, 1962, Hawk Moths of Central and Southern Africa: 55. Reinstated as a species and transferred to Neopolyptychus by Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 20.
